$470m CCTV Cameras installed in Abuja, Nigeria by ZTE Corporation of China.

I personally believe this is a total waste of money. $470m when there is no light half the time to see what is actually happening on the CCTV….

December 21, 2012 end of the world: Mayan prophecy predicts apocalypse, but is it true?

Whats your take on the world coming to an end in 2012? New predictions on the way… December 12, 2012(12.12.12) or December 21,2012(21.12.12)…. Read on

The world has had its fair share of failed predictions about the date of the apocalypse, but the one that’s perhaps the most awaited is quickly approaching.

Many people believe December 21, 2012 to be the date of the apocalypse. Could this be the end of the world as we know it?

The Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, so many people believe that date to be the end of days.

According to CNN , the calendar had a 5,126-year cycle, so many wonder why the ancient civilization, known for their advanced grasp on astronomy, chose this date.

The Mayan calendar is divided into bak’tuns, 144,000-day cycles. According to NBC News , the last cycle on the calendar is fast approaching.

Other people believe that instead of destruction, humanity will enter a new era both physically and mentally. Skeptics believe nothing will happen at all and refer to the craze as an internet hoax.

December 21, 2012 hasn’t been the only prediction for the end of the world. According to , one of the most well-known failed predictions was that the Y2K bug would crash all the computers the moment the new millennium rang in, causing worldwide destruction.

Another scare was the Halley’s Comet flyby in 1910. According to the Livescience, comet tails contain deadly gas. When the earth passed through the tail of Halley’s Comet in 1910, many feared the entire earth would be poisoned. However, scientists soon debunked the claim.

December 21, 2012 is the start of the winter solstice.

CNN reported that on this date, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in nearly 26,000 years.

According to NBC News , archeologists found another reference to this date in the Mayan ruins of La Corona in Guatemala.

Theories abound about the cause of the possible end of the world. According to , some theorists believe a rogue planet could crash into Earth.

Others believe a magnetic pole reversal could send Earth back into the Stone Age.

However, according to NBC News , NASA says no one has anything to fear and that the day will pass without incident, adding that many theories have no factual basis.

The Telegraph reported that NASA believes that the Mayans never intended the calendar to end in 2012, but that instead, another cycle begins afterward. The Telegraph also reported that modern Maya say that there is no concept of an apocalypse in their culture.

What do you think? Will the world come to an end or not? Leave your comments below.

Lagos to ban smoking in public places

The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, on Monday said the state government would ban smoking in public places.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria that the provisions of the new traffic laws had prohibited people from drinking or smoking while driving in the state.

Ipaye said though the new law was aimed at reducing road carnage, it was also part of the government’s plans to ban smoking in public places.

He said, “It is an offence to smoke while driving, smoking is totally prohibited for drivers; obviously it is not just for safety reasons it is also for health reasons because we are moving towards banning smoking in all public places.

“It is an offence to drive drunk; if you’ve been taking drugs, this law provides for blood test to determine whether you have ingested drugs which are inconsistent with your ability to drive.

“So, this law makes it an offence to drive without a driver’s licence, without proper plate numbers. It is an offence to use the phone while you are driving except you have hands-free set so you don’t need to put the set to your ear.’’

Ipaye said the government decided to “criminalise” traffic offences and sanction offenders, as part of the strategy to bring the chaotic traffic situation within the metropolis under control.

He said, “We are keeping the roads in good repairs, but still, we have problems, and that problem is made worse by commercial motorcycles, by cart pushers, by even people rearing cattle.

“There seem all of a sudden to be no rules; people just disobey the traffic lights.”

Meanwhile, lawyers in the state have reacted to the new Parks and Garden Law.

The law made it mandatory for landlords to beautify the perimeter of their properties or face punishment.

The lawyers described the new law as an attempt to impoverish Lagosians.

A legal practitioner, Mr Spurgeon Ataene, said the law was obnoxious and oppressive.

He said  government did not have the right to punish landlords for not beautifying their property.

Another lawyer, Mr Ogedi Ogu, said the law was against natural justice, equity and good conscience.

We killed, arrested Boko Haram leaders – JTF

JTF officers

Soldiers manning a checkpoint in Kano shot to death two suspected Boko Haram leaders, AP reports.

The dead reportedly included the spokesman for the sect, as well as a commander who operates in Kogi State, a military official said.

It is unclear what happened next, though the official said soldiers shot dead both the commander and the spokesman, while adding that the wife and children remained in military custody.

The wife told soldiers the men had accompanied her to Kano as she sought medical help, the official said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the information was not to be made immediately public on Monday.

However, spokesman for the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Ikedichi Iweha, confirmed the development.

According to him, the operation was carried out in Hotoro area in Kano metropolis.

He said, “During the early morning operation, one member of the terrorists group was killed and two other members arrested.”

I cannot confirm to you the identity of the suspects arrested yet, because I don’t have the nominal role of the terrorists group.

“As soon as investigation is completed, the identity of the suspects will be made public. Investigation has to be completed before I can tell you the identity of the suspects.”

He said the operation lasted for over one hour before reports went round that very top members of the terrorist group were killed.

Government officials may be hesitating as they previously claimed to have arrested the sect’s spokesman, who uses the nom de guerre Abul Qaqa when speaking to journalists. Confusion over his death sparked threats by the sect against journalists who previously reported on the government claim.
